  • hi dr hsu,

saw you on dr oz program.

is there a TCM for vascular dementia? mom has it.

in reading about TCM i understand their is treatment for arthritis as it relates to pain and visual swelling. does TCM also treat chronic inflammation as seen in the CRP test or ESR test ? i think its different from regular swelling and pain.

where would i find those herbs you refer to in this blog for the flu season? are they a tea or a tablet?

    thanks
    thelma

  • Thanks for watching!

The diseases you mention are in Western medical terminology. An acupuncturist would make a diagnosis and treatment plan according to Chinese Medicine terminology. It may be a different approach but the desired results can still be achieved.

That being said, acupuncture and Chinese herbs can be very effective for all kinds of arthritis. Your mother, assuming she has multi-infarct dementia (MID), which is the most common type, should be managed in a way which prevents further damage. Acupuncture and herbal medicine have shown promise in some research studies: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15510807; http://www.springerlink.com/content/n054675phg473188/; http://www.liebertonline.com/doi/abs/10.1089/ars.1999.1.4-469

Most Western pharmaceuticals were originally derived from herbs. 25% of current pharmaceuticals still have herbal components. So, remember, herbs are medicine. One should always consult with a board certified herbalist if they are gong to use herbs. Whether it is pharmaceuticals or herbals, never self-medicate.
